Ancient history

c. 2,000 years beforeYmir Fritz

A slave girl is blamed for a crime and hunted for sport. Cornered, she falls into the hollow of an enormous tree and touches something that has waited there far longer than people — the source of all living matter.

She rises as the first Titan. The king who owned her turns that power into a weapon, and when she dies thirteen years later her strength is split between her three daughters, Maria, Rose and Sina.

Ymir's descendants — the Subjects of Ymir — carry the nine Titans forward, each passing to a new inheritor as the last one dies. With them the Eldian Empire crushes Marley and rules the continent.

Every Subject of Ymir is joined through the Paths, an unseen web in which Ymir herself labours on. It is what makes a Titan possible, and what the Founding Titan can reach into.

c. 100 years beforeEldia turns on itself

The great Eldian houses begin to fight one another with their Titans. Marley, patient for centuries, uses the chaos: the Tybur family and Marley's agents turn the war against the empire.

When it ends, Marley holds seven of the nine Titans. Only the Founding and the Attack stay out of its hands.

c. 743Karl Fritz, 145th king

The king who holds the Founding Titan wants no more of it. Karl Fritz leads as many Eldians as will follow across the sea to Paradis Island and binds every royal inheritor after him to a vow of peace.

Then he rewrites their memories. The people who reach the island will remember no world beyond it.

c. 743Maria · Rose · Sina

Karl Fritz raises three concentric walls, each fifty metres high. They are not built — they are grown, from millions of Colossal Titans standing shoulder to shoulder, hardened into stone.

He tells the world that if Paradis is ever attacked, the Titans in the walls will march. For a hundred years, nobody tests him.

The modern era

Year 845Shiganshina

A Titan taller than the wall appears over Shiganshina and kicks the outer gate in. Mindless Titans pour through; an armoured one breaks the inner gate behind them.

Eren Yeager watches his mother die. Humanity loses Wall Maria and a third of its land. A year later a fifth of the population, most of them refugees, is sent out to retake it; almost none return.

Year 850Humanity strikes back

The Colossal Titan returns, this time at Trost. In the chaos, Eren discovers he can become a Titan himself — and carries a boulder across the district to seal the breach. It is humanity's first real victory.

The Survey Corps, the only branch that goes beyond the walls, takes him in. Their expeditions reveal a Female Titan with a human mind, and a secret hiding in the walls themselves.

Year 850The basement

The Survey Corps marches back to Shiganshina to retake Wall Maria and reach the basement of Eren's old home. Waiting for them are the Armored, the Beast and the Colossal Titans.

Erwin Smith leads a suicide charge to buy a single chance. Armin nearly dies stopping the Colossal and inherits it. In the basement, three books tell them what lies beyond the sea.

Year 851The world outside

Humanity was never extinct. Beyond the sea lies Marley, a nation that has used the Titans as weapons for a century and keeps Eldians behind walls of its own, in internment zones, wearing armbands.

The Survey Corps reaches the ocean. Eren looks across it and asks the question the rest of the story answers: if they kill every enemy over there, will they finally be free?

Year 854Liberio

In Liberio, before the world's envoys, Willy Tybur tells his family's version of history and declares war on Paradis. As he speaks, Eren — hidden in the city for months — transforms beneath the stage.

The Survey Corps follows him in. The War Hammer falls, the Marleyan fleet burns in the harbour, and the war the world wanted begins on Marley's own streets.

Year 854The walls walk

Eren reaches Ymir in the Paths and frees the Colossal Titans inside the walls. The stone cracks and falls away, and millions of them begin to walk.

Their march will flatten everything beyond Paradis. The walls that kept Titans out for a century were Titans all along — and now they are the end of the world.

Year 854Fort Salta

An alliance nobody could have imagined — the last of the Survey Corps and the Marleyan Warriors who once destroyed their home — flies ahead of the march to stop it.

At Fort Salta, where the world makes its final stand, Mikasa Ackerman ends it. With Eren's death the power of the Titans leaves the world, two thousand years after it arrived.

After 854A tree on a hill

The Titans are gone. The walls are rubble. The people who survived have to live with one another without a monster to blame.

On a hill above Paradis, a tree grows over a grave — the same shape, far smaller, as the one where it all began.
